Testing Arabians in Australia
In an attempt to encourage members to test horses at the time of registration there will be a discount offered on DNA if LFS &/or CA testing is done
at the same time as the DNA for registration. The fee for LFS is $60 & CA $60 at Uni of Qld, the normal DNA fee is $70 but this will be reduced to
$60 if LFS &/or CA is performed at the same time.

Buff Coat Conversion to DNA
In 1993/94 the laboratory ceased bloodtyping and moved to DNA. At that time they kept part of some of the blood samples, those with bloodtype numbers above 226849, and these samples were called buffy coats. The laboratory has been converting these buffy coats to DNA for a reduced fee but due to the age of the samples they are now having problems extracting a good DNA profile.
In future the owner of any horse with a bloodtype number greater than 226849 will be sent a DNA kit when DNA is required. The fee will remain unchanged at the moment.
The Society would strongly recommend that owners check the bloodtype numbers of their old horses which may require DNA in future and ensure that a DNA kit is applied for. Please remember that no Arabian born after 1/8/2005 will be registered as a Purebred unless the DNA of both sire and dam are on file with the Society.

PICs for Horse Properties in Victoria
Dear Horse Industry member,
As you may be aware, in July this year it became compulsory for the owners of properties running one or more horses on them to have a Property Identification Code (PIC).
The PIC database provides the Department of Primary Industries (DPI) with up to date knowledge of Victoria’s livestock populations and contact details for livestock owners, which proves invaluable in responding to emergency animal disease (EAD) events and assists with emergencies such as bushfires. Following the equine influenza outbreak, it was agreed that Victorian horse owners would be well served by being incorporated into the PIC system. This idea had gained strong industry support, which was further bolstered by the Black Saturday bushfire event.
Obtaining a PIC is free of charge and is easy to apply for. Just contact the DPI NLIS Helpline on: 1800 678 779 or visit the DPI website: www.dpi.vic.gov.au/nlis for more information.
Please find attached below a list of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) for horse property PICs. If it is possible to incorporate this information into your equine organisation's newsletter / magazine I would be most grateful.

Derivative Registries - Change of Minimum Percentages
After consideration of the Derivative Survey Results at the December Board meeting it was decided:
“That we introduce the Minimum 12.5% Arabian blood across our Derivative Registries immediately while at the same time Derivative Breeders can continue to register lower percentage horses that comply with the present Regulations. All Derivative horses registered after 1st August 2012 must comply with the new Regulations in order to be registered”
This will not affect horses of a lower percentage already registered however any future breeding of those horses will need to be in line with the new Regulations. The Board is mindful of the adjustments some Derivative breeders may need to make to their breeding programs to comply, hence the time period given.

email address as the password is emailed automatically to the email address on our database.
Rush Fees
There are an increasing number of registration applications being received with requests for
priority processing to enable the horse being shown at forth coming show etc.
In fairness to all members it has been decided to introduce a surcharge for any registrations that require such priority.
While we aim for a 2 week turn around in peak periods this cannot be achieved,
in the majority of cases registrations are processed within 2-3 days of receipt.
Please realise that paying with a credit card will delay your application by a
day or two. If the horse requires DNA or hair storage time must be allocated by the applicant
for these, the turnaround time at the laboratory is out of the Society’s control and varies according to the time of the year.
In order to guarantee priority of processing your application the following fees will apply:
Processing within 2 weeks of receipt - $50
Processing within 1 weeks of receipt - $100
This will ensure attention to the initial application, any further delays due to incorrect submission are not guaranteed.
Gelding Amnesty
There will be an amnesty for the registration of Geldings until the 31st December 2009.
All geldings will be registered at minimum fees where applications are received between October 1st and December 31st 2009.

News from the Lab - Buffy Coats
The laboratory has advised that as many of the Buffy Coats are 10-14 years old they may
be starting to deteriorate.
There is no guarantee that a DNA sample can be extracted from a Buffy Coat.
Members would be advised to have any Buffy Coats for their horses converted to DNA
(cost $25) or ensure that a hair sample correctly stored is available as a back up.
