We have lost someone whose kindness, generosity, inspiration, and enthusiasm was second to none. Someone with a pure passion for the Arabian horse that lasted for her lifetime. Someone who was happy to reach out and help others achieve their dreams and aspirations. She mentored so many young breeders and owners, candidly and honestly, so generous with her time, and so involved with any and all events and promotions that introduced the breed to the wider community.
Marion Sharman’s name is most widely-known as the owner of the super sire stallion Royal Domino [iiu GB] who she purchased as a foal from HER mentor Mrs Elwyn Bligh of Bostocks Stud way back in 1953. Marion and her husband Tom established Jangharm Stud at Cooranga North, breeding such a huge group of notable Arabians that I will list just a few here – Shiekie [1962], Ibn Domino [1967], Mildom [1963] Royaljan [1968], Arim [1971], Royal Gindi [1973], Dominion [1975] and the mare Trix Silver [dam of the great Ralvon Pilgrim, 1958]. Younger members would remember Baranski, Australian National Champion Stallion of 2007. There wasn’t a dry eye in the house when Marion came forward for the presentation the night he won. It was such a fitting tribute to a devoted and astute breeder.
Luckily for us all Marion was a joiner and a doer who enthusiastically helped organize and run Shows and events, and was a founding member of organizations such as the Queensland Division of the AHSA and the Downs Arabian Club. She often accepted committee roles and was Secretary for one group or another for many, many years. She was also a very long time Secretary of the Queensland Horse Council. Both Marion and Tom were National Panel judges, and Honorary Life Members of the AHSA.
Marion turned 93 just last Friday. Her many friends and family will miss her forever. Our condolences go out to her family – her husband Tom, and children Tony, Richard, Kathryn and Phillip, their spouses and families.
